Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College combines hands-on learning, personal attention and eye-opening social, spiritual and athletic activities to empower students to aspire higher.
SMWC students find their voice and lifelong friends in the growing community of 900 campus-based, online and graduate students. They build their confidence and experience life-changing opportunities in 50 academic programs - with top majors such as equine, music therapy, nursing, education, psychology, business administration and human services. They grow to think critically, engage in lifelong leadership and effect positive change in a spirit of service and social responsibility.
SMWC’s unique educational philosophy stresses an exploration of spirituality, a respect for diversity, a passion for stewardship and, as its motto, “Virtus cum Scientia” (Virtue and Knowledge United) states, a devotion to the unity of faith and reason.
Founded in 1840 by the 8th U.S. saint, Mother Theodore Guerin, SMWC is the only Catholic college in Terre Haute (IN) and its surrounding area. Nurturing a vibrant campus community filled with history and tradition in a beautiful 67-acre wooded campus, SMWC is committed to educating the whole person. Rooted in the Catholic tradition, we embrace people of all faith backgrounds in an atmosphere of inclusion.
SMWC has a growing athletics program which currently competes in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, equestrian (Hunt Seat), equestrian (Western), volleyball, men’s cross country and men’s golf. It is home to active student organizations, theatre and musical performances, art exhibits and campus ministry.
