Becoming a Student Ambassador

Attending a university presents you with many opportunities to get involved on campus. To name a few, there are many opportunities to partake in department clubs, fraternities, sororities, and leadership roles. Finding my niche during my first year of college took a lot of work. I tried different things to see what I liked and did not like and weeded out different clubs. This continued into my sophomore year until I stumbled across a flyer calling for student ambassadors.

A student ambassador is a student that has the opportunity to represent their university in a positive light. You spend a lot of time working with prospective students and their families during their admission process. Visiting colleges can be an anxiety-inducing experience when you have admission counselors hurling information at you left and right. As a student ambassador, you get to act as the bridge that allows prospective students to get a feel for the campus through the lens of a current student.

Only some people are equipped to become a student ambassador. Many qualities go into filling this role effectively. One of the most important qualities is being proud of your school and having an overall positive experience. Your job as an ambassador will be to present your university in a way that will convince students from all over to choose it over the other colleges they are considering. This will be a very difficult task if you have yet to enjoy receiving an education at your institution. If speaking of positive and genuine experiences you have had comes easily, this may be a good role for you!

Equally important is the ability to communicate with people you do not know. This is also an opportunity to expand on this skill. A student ambassador's main job is to guide campus tours. You have multiple responsibilities while providing tours. The most important task as an ambassador is showing and explaining different facilities in a way that leaves the prospective student with a basic understanding of the campus layout. Before signing up to become an ambassador, you should ensure you are familiar with your campus. You do not have to know everything, but you should have a good enough idea. You will receive some training to ensure you know what you need.

While on tours, you should also be conversing with the visitors and ensuring they know they can ask questions at any point. You should never try to answer a question you do not know! It is okay to let them know that you are unsure and ask them to keep the question in mind for an admission counselor who might be able to answer it better. You will consistently engage with the families and students by asking questions like where they are from if they have an intended major in mind, or how they heard about your school. This creates an impressionable and personal experience.

Becoming a student ambassador is a huge responsibility to take on. It is a leadership role that allows you to become a representative of your university. This opportunity builds your credibility and can be a great thing to add to your resume that may make you stand out. Additionally, it is a great way to get involved and work with other students at your university while sharing your experience. Becoming an ambassador is only for some. However, if you have the qualities it takes, this leadership role might be a great way for you to get involved.
