Transitioning from Middle School to High School

Transitioning from middle school to high school can be both exciting and stressful for students. Many are nervous about navigating a bigger building, being with upperclassmen, and handling the new responsibilities that come with being in high school. To help ease their nerves, we’ve put together ten tips for students use while transitioning from middle school to high school.

Ten Tips To Make Starting High School Easier:

  1. Before school begins attend a freshman orientation.
  2. Sign up for your high school’s peer mentoring program. It’s an excellent way to meet other students and get to know upperclassmen.
  3. Get organized! It is important to come to class prepared. Make sure you have a notebook or folder for each class. Keep track of your assignments. Check the homework hotline every night. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher questions.
  4. Find a comfortable place in your home to study with few distractions. Make sure it is stocked with all of the tools that you will need, like good lighting, pens/pencils, a calculator, your computer charger, and maybe even some snacks.
  5. Build a relationship with your teachers. Teachers are not only there to teach but also help students with the transition from middle school to high school.
  6. Set up a meeting with your school counselor.
  7. Join extra-curricular activities like sports, school clubs, music programs, and volunteering. Extra-curricular activities are a great way to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and build relationships.
  8. Set realistic yearly academic goals. They will help you stay focused and feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the school year.
  9. Be social and have fun! Attend school events like sports games, concerts, plays and more.
  10. Remember to balance your day. School is your first priority and everything else is second.
